Food pairing with beer

Cheers, people!

Yes, I can definitely enjoy a nice beer on tap, both in a café and with a delicious dish it is served with. I also think it is great in gastronomic restaurants, where beer is sometimes placed next to wines in the adjusted drinks formula! This shows originality in the sommelier and love for our rich Belgian beer culture. That is why I wrote this blog: to show you how to best pair a beer with a dish, how to serve beer, how to best store it, and a bit about beer etiquette. Of course, also recipes in which I use beer and dishes that go with certain beers in food pairing

Beer pairing recipe booklet

I have an extra surprise for you! Especially for my fellow beer enthusiasts, I have put together a unique recipe booklet. This booklet is packed with delicious recipes where beer takes center stage – from classic beer dishes to creative culinary recipes.

How do you choose the right beer for your dish?

Choosing the right beer for a dish to create a perfect flavor combination can lead to a delightful culinary experience. Here are some tips for selecting the right beer for the right dish:

Similarity in flavor profile: Choose beers and dishes that have similar flavor profiles. For example, lighter beers like pilsners pair well with light, fresh dishes like salads and fish, while heavier and more robust beers like stouts and porters go better with grilled meats and hearty stews.
Contrasting flavors: Sometimes, contrasts in flavors can create an interesting combination. For instance, a bitter IPA can work well with spicy dishes, as the bitterness can soften the heat.
Regional combinations: Consider pairing beers and dishes from the same region. For example, Belgian beers like a Belgian dubbel with Belgian dishes like stew.
Ingredients: Think about the ingredients in both the beer and the dish. For example, a beer with fruity notes can pair well with a dessert that contains fruit.
Texture and mouthfeel: Consider the texture of the dish and how the beer complements it. A creamy beer can work well with a creamy dish.
Experiment: Food pairing is partly a matter of personal preference, so don’t hesitate to experiment. Try different combinations and discover what best suits your taste.
Ask for advice: If you’re in a restaurant, don’t hesitate to ask the staff for recommendations. Sommeliers and beer experts are often well-versed in food pairing and can provide valuable suggestions.
Taste: Take your time to taste. Take a sip of the beer and a bite of the dish and try to analyze how the flavors come together. Sometimes, an apparently unlikely combination can taste surprisingly good.

Remember that food pairing is an art, and it’s all about discovering flavor combinations that you enjoy the most. So don’t be afraid to experiment and enjoy the process of finding the perfect match between beer and dish.

How to taste beer?

Tasting beer is so much more than just taking a sip. It’s an experience for all your senses. So grab your favorite beer, and let’s discover this together!

Sight: See how the beer foams in your glass and the colors play. Is it dark, light, or somewhere in between? This is your first hint about what to expect.
Hearing: Listen to the sound of the beer as you pour it. The fizz and splatter can already reveal something about the texture and freshness.
Touch: Feel the beer in your mouth. Is it light or heavy, smooth or sparkling? The texture tells a story about the ingredients and the brewing process.
Smell: Smell deeply before taking a sip. Can you catch hints of fruit, spices, or perhaps flowers? Each aroma adds a layer to the complexity of the beer.
Taste: And then, the taste. Think of the saying “like an angel peeing on your tongue”! Try to recognize the basic flavors: sweet, sour, bitter, salty. Do you find notes of malt or the bitterness of hops? Or perhaps a fresh sour citrus note? Also, try to discover the subtle flavors: buttery caramel, clove, thyme, anise, banana, apricot, berries, orange, lime, lemon, or even yuzu.

Every sip can be a journey of discovery. Beer tasting is a personal experience, and everyone will find something different in it. By tasting mindfully, you not only learn about your preferences, but you also discover the ingredients and craftsmanship behind each brew. This way, you learn not only what you are drinking but also why you enjoy it.

At what temperature do you serve beer?

With beer, it's a bit like with wine: not too warm, but definitely not too cold either. If you serve beer too cold, few aromas are released, and it becomes superficial. If you serve it too warm, the beer loses its refreshing character. For some beer brands, the ideal serving temperature is also indicated on the label, which is handy.

How can you best store beer?

If you are a true beer fan, it's essential to know how and where to store your beers. The ideal spot? A cool, dark place. Why? Well, beer and heat do not go well together. Too warm conditions accelerate the aging process of your beer.
And regarding light, that's also something to consider. Light can cause an unwanted reaction with the hops, which can affect the aroma and taste of your beer. That's why beers are often bottled in brown and green bottles – they protect against light.
Don't think that beer, like wine, gets better with age. It is usually best to drink pale beers when they are still young, while dark beers can be stored a bit longer.
And don't forget: always keep your beer bottles well sealed. You don't want the CO2, which creates the fizz, to escape. One last tip: always store your beer bottles, small or large (like the 75cl bottles), upright. This ensures that any yeast settles at the bottom, keeping your beer perfect.

SANTÉ!

Santé! Now it's your turn to get started. Hopefully, my tips inspire you and you feel like experimenting with beer and food. Remember that beer is much more than just a drink – it's a way to elevate your dishes and enjoy with friends. So, choose a beer that matches your meal, raise your glass (or bottle, if that's your style), and toast to the good things in life. Santé and enjoy!
