Bangkok like a local: the ultimate guide for 2026

Forget the clichés, because this is the ultimate guide to modern Bangkok! Discover the best street food, fine dining, cozy brunch, and coffee spots and so much more. We have discovered super fun places with local guide Teya Suchira (who even showed Will Smith around!) to show you places you usually walk past.

To see the real Thailand, I surrounded myself with the best people. My base was The Salil Hotel Riverside, an oasis of tranquility by the river where I could perfectly unwind after a day full of stimuli. But the secret of this trip lay in the encounters. Thanks to Travel Exclusive Asia and See Real Thailand I found myself in places where tourists usually never end up.

My absolute secret weapon? Guide Teya Suchira. She is a true insider. She has even guided Will Smith & Johnny Depp and she showed me the flavors and stories of the city that have greatly inspired me as a chef.

Get ready for a list full of hotspots, hidden gems, and of course, plenty of tastings!

1. Street food: The Taste of Chinatown

Bangkok without street food is like my kitchen without pepper and salt: unthinkable. The iconic Chinatown (Yaowarat) is the beating heart of this scene. The heat of the woks, the aromas of fresh herbs... it's an explosion for your senses.

1. Nai Ek Roll Noodle – A Michelin-recognized stall famous for its 'roll noodles'. The broth is spicy and comforting. Tip: join the queue early, as it's worth the wait.

2. OK Pad Thai – Sometimes simple is the best. This is considered by many to be the best Pad Thai in Bangkok. Don't expect frills, just a legendary plate of food.

3. Fi Keaw Seafood – A classic stop for seafood lovers. It's fresh, local, and you absolutely won't pay tourist prices here.

4. Nong Duck Noodle – You'll find this place right in front of the Mini Big C supermarket. The line of locals reveals the quality: the duck is tender and the broth is incredibly rich in flavor.

5. Guay Jub Ouan Pochana – This old-school Chinese restaurant is an experience in itself. It's so authentic that even members of the Chinese mafia come here to eat, including their bodyguards. That's really the only review you need.

2. Local favorites: here you must be!

As a chef, I am always looking for places where tradition is still truly in the pan. These are my personal favorites spread across the city:

1. Som Som Seafood – This place is all about no-frills seafood that is perfectly cooked. The locals swear by the crab fried rice.

2. Jack’s Bar (Riverside) – An informal riverside bar with surprisingly good Thai food. The perfect spot for a relaxing evening by the water.

3. Saengchai Phochana (Sukhumvit) – A true institution in Bangkok. They are open until 3 AM, making it the go-to place for night owls and chefs finishing their shifts.

4. K. Panich Sticky Rice (Old City) – They have been using the same family recipe here since 1952. The mango sticky rice is simply legendary and probably the best you will ever taste.

5. Delia (Old City) – Located in a beautiful hundred-year-old building near Chinatown. This Michelin-selected Mexican hotspot by chef Gaby Espinosa combines handmade tortillas with bold Thai ingredients.

3. Coffee & brunch for enthusiasts!

Even in a city that never sleeps, you need moments to slow down with a good cup of coffee.

1. MTCH (Ari) – A minimalist heaven for matcha lovers in the trendy Ari district.

2. Rough and Round (Ari) – This small, design-forward café is constantly voted one of the best coffee spots in the area.

3. Cafe Vondervic (Sukhumvit/Ari) – A cozy coffee bar with fantastic pastries. A true local favorite to relax for a bit.

4. Wilma’s Bakehouse (Sukhumvit) – In the heart of Thonglor, you will find freshly baked artisanal bread and pastries daily.

5. Daythem Tea Studio – A hidden matcha bar in a quiet alley in Talat Noi. Each drink is prepared with utmost precision in a beautiful interior of wood and concrete.

4. Gastronomic

These restaurants are among the most unique culinary spots in Bangkok. From iconic Michelin restaurants to hidden fine dining addresses in beautifully restored buildings.

1. POTONG – An impressive fine dining restaurant spread over multiple floors in a restored Chinatown shophouse. One of the most unique culinary experiences in Bangkok.

2. Nusara (Old City) – Awarded 1 Michelin star and ranked #6 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. An intimate rooftop restaurant with a view of Wat Pho, where chef Ton pays tribute to his grandmother's recipes. Only 10 seats, so booking well in advance is essential.

3. Gaa – A 2 Michelin star restaurant by chef Garima Arora, the first Indian female chef ever to receive two stars. Located in a beautifully restored Thai house over 60 years old, with an innovative interpretation of progressive Indian cuisine.

4. Nahm (Silom / Sathorn) – An iconic Thai restaurant with 1 Michelin star, located in the COMO Metropolitan hotel. Chef Pim gives traditional Thai flavors a modern and refined twist, making Nahm one of the absolute top restaurants in Asia for years.

5. Luma – A stylish culinary hotspot in Bangkok where refined dishes, an elegant interior, and a modern atmosphere come together.

5. BARS

Divine skylines and hidden speakeasies: I will take you to my favorite bars in vibrant Bangkok.

1. The Speakeasy (Langsuan) - Escape the hustle and discover a skyline that rewards all your efforts immediately.

2. Sky Bar (Bang Rak) – Enjoy your cocktails at dizzying heights at the legendary bar from The Hangover II.

3. Belga (Sukhumvit) - A Belgian rooftop brasserie with an impressive menu of over 40 Belgian beers and brasserie classics.

4. Vesper (Silom/Sathorn) - A staple in Asia's 50 Best Bars since 2016, where European vibes and delicious cocktails come together.

5. Rabbit Hole (Sukhumvit) - Hidden in Thonglor, you will find this three-story speakeasy, where R&B and an alphabet cocktail menu set the tone. And number 31 on the list of Asia’s Best Bars.

6. The best shopping & spa spots!

As a chef, I have a weakness for beautiful design and craftsmanship. Bangkok has insane malls, but I prefer to visit the boutiques where the selection is curated with care.

1. A Few Better Things (Sukhumvit) – In Thonglor, you will find this curated lifestyle store. The name says it all: beautiful design objects that you won't find anywhere else. It is the place for a unique gift (or for yourself).

2. Loft Eyes (Sukhumvit) – An independent eyewear boutique with an amazing selection of frames. Very stylish and just a bit different from the crowd.

3. Aesop (Sukhumvit) – Of course, we know this iconic brand, but the location in Thonglor is designed so beautifully that it is worth a visit just for the atmosphere and the scent.

4. The Salil Hotel Riverside - Of course, I have to include this one as well. I found such peace here and would recommend everyone to book a (short) stay here.

5. Infinity Spa - An award-winning spa that is truly fully booked continuously. If you want to come here, I recommend that you definitely make a reservation in advance.
