Pears in syrup

Quick

Easy

Pears in syrup, or preserved pears, are always nice to have on hand! I have a pear tree in my garden with an old variety of cooking pears—delicious! But you can actually make this recipe with any type of pear. The cooking time will just be a bit more or less.

I make the syrup from water and cane sugar with cinnamon, lemon, and vanilla, but you can adjust this to your taste. I store the pears in canning jars so I always have them on hand for a delicious pear tart or as a topping for yogurt with granola.

250 g of cane sugar

6 stewed pears (or another pear species)
1 vanilla pod
1 cinnamon stick
1 Organic lemon (washed)
1 liter of water
250 g of cane sugar

Preparation method

How do you make this?

Peel the pears or leave part of the skin on for a rustic look. Halve them or leave them whole and remove the core with a melon baller.

Slice the lemon and scrape the seeds from the vanilla pod.

Place the pears together with the lemon slices, vanilla seeds, and cinnamon stick in a large stew pot. Add the water and cane sugar.

Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer gently:

For cooking pears: about 20 minutes

For softer pear varieties: about 10 minutes

Remove the pears from the syrup and let them cool. They are now ready to use!
