Chipotle lime margarita

Easy

For me, a classic Margarita is one of those cocktails that immediately evokes a holiday feeling. Fresh, slightly tart, a touch sweet, and wonderfully refreshing. Moreover, it is one of the easiest cocktails to make at home.

For this version, I give the classic Margarita a little twist: a chipotle-lime rim. This creates a subtle smoky and spicy touch that pairs perfectly with the fresh lime flavor and the tequila.

I make this Margarita in just a few minutes. Just shake, pour into a nice glass, and you have a cocktail that tastes like you're sitting on a sunny terrace. Perfect as an aperitif, for a party, or simply to treat yourself.

A fan of Margaritas? Then this version also goes very nicely next to my Margarita with cucumber as a fresh addition to your cocktail page.

50 ml tequila, preferably reposado
30 ml Cointreau or triple sec
20 to 30 ml fresh lime juice
a handful of ice cubes

1/2 lime
1 tablespoon fleur de sel or coarse salt
1 teaspoon chipotle powder
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lime zest

extra ice cubes
slices of lime or lemon for the glass

Preparation method

How do you make this?

Rub the rim of a glass with the cut side of half a lime.

Mix the salt with the chipotle powder and the lime zest on a small plate.

Carefully swirl the rim of the glass into the mixture to create a nice spicy and salty rim.

Put the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and a handful of ice cubes in a cocktail shaker.

Shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until everything is ice cold.

Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass.

Optionally add a few ice cubes and a slice of lime and serve immediately.

Tips

  • Replace the tequila and Cointreau with an alcohol-free alternative to tequila and orange liqueur, or use an extra 40 ml of fresh orange juice and 20 ml of sparkling water for a refreshing mocktail style.
  • Always use freshly squeezed lime juice. That really makes the difference in taste. If you want a softer Margarita, start with 20 ml of lime juice. If you like it fresh and crisp, aim for 30 ml.
  • Reposado tequila gives a slightly rounder and warmer flavor. Blanco tequila makes it fresher and crisper.
  • If you prefer the edge a bit milder, use slightly less chipotle and some extra salt.
  • Serve this Margarita with tacos, nachos, or guacamole for the ultimate appetizer moment.
  • Storage tips
I prefer to drink this cocktail immediately after shaking. Then it is perfectly cold and beautifully balanced. What you can prepare in advance: the chipotle-salt mix, the glasses, and squeezing the lime juice. That way, your cocktail will be on the table in less than a minute when you have guests.
