Making a Croque Bolognese is so rewarding. It's delicious, hearty, and above all, super easy to make. But sometimes I make it even more delicious by adding an extra scoop ofBolognese sauceand melted cheese. I then use a Bunsen burner to caramelize the cheese. The result? A croquette that's not only creamy on the inside but also has a cheesy topping that's simply irresistible.

What do you need?

For the croque

  • 4 thick slices of wheat bread (or bread of your choice)
  • 8 slices of fontina or provolone cheese
  • 4 to 6 slices of Parma ham
  • 4 tablespoonsBolognese sauceΒ 

For the topping

Storage instructionsΒ 

  • In the refrigerator: maximum 1 day, well wrapped in aluminum foil or an airtight box.
  • In the freezer: up to 1 month, although it tastes best fresh.
  • Warm upHeat for 10 minutes in a preheated oven at 180Β°C or 3 minutes on a contact grill. Microwaving will make it less crispy.

Make it veggie!

Replace the Parma ham with grilled vegetables like zucchini or eggplant. You can also use grilled bell peppers for extra sweetness. The rest of the recipe remains the same, including the cheesy topping.

Preparation method

How do you make this?

Verwarm je grillmachine al op.Β 

Leg een eerste snee brood op een plank en beleg hem met 2 sneetjes fontina.Β 

Leg daarop 2 Γ  3 sneetjes parmaham en een schepje BolognaisesausΒ Β 

Sluit af met nog 2 sneetjes fontina en dek af met de tweede snee brood.Β 

Herhaal voor de tweede Croque.Β 

Plaats tussende gril, kies optie croque en bak tot de kaas gesmolten is en het brood goudbruin krokant is.Β 

Haal de croque uit het toestel en leg op elk een extraΒ  Bolognaisesaus.Β 

Bestrooi met geraspte Parmezaanse kaas en grattineerΒ  de kaas lichtjes met een bunzenbrandertje voor een ultieme finish.Β 

Tips

  • Don't have a Bunsen burner at home? Place the croquette briefly under the broiler of your oven.
  • Vary the bread: sourdough bread or a hearty nut bread adds extra character.
  • Prefer something a bit spicier? Sprinkle some chili flakes over it before caramelizing the cheese.
  • Make extraBolognese sauceand freeze them in portions, so you always have a supply on hand.
