4x my favorite HOTSPOTS in Brussels

Brussels really does keep surprising me — just when you think you've seen it all, another gem pops up! From a secret cocktail bar behind a bookcase (how cool is that?!), to a colorful taco joint where the vibes are as spicy as the salsa, and an Italian spot that beams you straight to Tuscany… I've discovered, tasted and approved them all.

And this time I even spotted an uber-hip matcha bar that is not only photogenic, but also surprisingly delicious! Matcha is literally everywhere these days — from lattes to desserts — and believe me: it's worth the hype.

Four completely different places, each with their own atmosphere, flavours and element of surprise. Ideal for those who like to send their taste buds on a city trip, right in their own country.

These are my current favorites — curious which one you'll try first?

1. LA STAZIONE

Alsembergsesteenweg 411, 1180 Ukkel

A new Italian in Brussels? That gets me instantly excited. Think: the smell of freshly baked focaccia before you even step inside, a marble counter behind which an Italian nonna is busy stirring a pot of steaming ragu, and a shop section where you spontaneously want to pull out your shopping bag.

This place is a delightful mix of a trattoria, a deli, and a caterer, entirely run by an Italian family (yes, including hand gestures and warmth). There is no fixed menu, just some suggestions that change according to the season — and especially: what they found at the market that morning.

I hadn't made a reservation (rebellious, I know), but as a solo diner, I found a spot at the corner of the bar by the open kitchen — ideal view of the whole action.

I started with dipping bread in delicious olive oil (yep, the bottle came home with me) and a non-alcoholic spritz that fit perfectly into the picture. What did I taste? Not classics from a fixed menu, but surprises of the day.

Vitello tonnato: beautifully presented, one of those plates that leaves you momentarily speechless. Then: pasta with borlotti beans and raw ham, a combination you only find in local bistros in Italy, and that's exactly why I went for it. My pants button was already open from the overly enthusiastic bread dipping, so the homemade tiramisu unfortunately didn't make it (I did see it wistfully pass by on a plate towards the neighbors...).

And then: the shop. I didn't bring a cooler bag, so I walked out crying without the ready-made arancini or lasagnas to take home. But next time... I'm prepared!

PS: Don't forget to make a reservation. I was lucky, but you don't want to tempt fate.

"That pasta was really spot-on: savory, creamy, with just enough parmesan. After that? Completely happy. I didn't even need dessert, and that's saying a lot!"
2. GRINGO

I find myself in the quartier chaud of Brussels: Chatelaine. It suddenly gets a spicy Mexican upgrade at Gringo Taco – and I’m a fan, guys! The founders are two buddies who are head over heels in love with Mexico City, and you can taste it in every detail. Think: street vibes, open kitchen, homemade sauces that seriously pack a punch, and tacos with a twist that make your mouth water. Aldwin (23) is full of ideas – young, creative, and eager to venture into business. Cédric (39) is a staple in the Brussels hospitality scene, driven by his love for hospitality.

I tasted among other things a milanesa fried chicken taco (hallelujah!) and a few specials that they create together with other brands. Those collabs that instantly make you crave.

As they say themselves:

“We wanted to bring the vibe of Mexico City to Brussels, with energy, flavor, and a wink.”

And guess what? That is 100% successful.

And what a vibe, guys! The menu is full of classics and surprises, but they also regularly bring specials – collaborations with other brands, new flavors, limited editions… You name it. Ideal if you, like me, can’t choose: you just put together a tasting with three different tacos. And seriously: that milanesa fried chicken taco was truly finger-licking good.

You finish in style with their cinnamon bun with chili soft serve (crazy delicious!) or you try their canned cocktails, all bottled in-house at the back of the restaurant. Yes really, their own Paloma and hibiscus mix in a can – how cool is that?

Gringo is young, cool, and above all straight-up delicious. During the day, it buzzes with energy, and in the evening the atmosphere shifts to intimate and cozy, with dimmer lights, djs, and occasionally even live acts. Whether you want to grab a taco quickly or make a whole evening out of it – one thing is for sure: you’ll go home with a big smile.

3. Yi Chan & Dragon

Yi Chan has been a staple in Brussels for me for ten years. The restaurant combines refined Asian dishes with a top-notch cocktail offering. But what we recently discovered is the hidden gem just above: DRAGON, a speakeasy bar that you can only enter via a temporary tattoo and an Instagram DM. Behind the bar of Yi Chan, you go up a staircase, and suddenly you’re in a laboratory-like setting: stainless steel tables, carefully selected glassware, a rotavap bubbling away. Only six seats. Everything here is handcrafted – literally and figuratively. And the atmosphere? Intimate, serene, and filled with stories.

When you enter, you show your tattoo. Then you go behind the bar up a staircase, and suddenly you're in another world.

Host Yen Pham is not just any bartender. He is a storyteller, an alchemist on a mission: to evoke memories through taste. He calls his cocktails "liquid memories" and they are built with techniques typically found only in Michelin-star kitchens. "It's not about buzz, it's about emotion," he says. "When I make a cocktail, I want you to relive a scent, a feeling, a moment."

Jasminethé distillate, hydrosol, verjus & sugar with infusions. Here, cocktails are a form of storytelling.

We taste five mini-cocktails, each inspired by a ‘madeleine de Proust’. One based on jasmine, one with roasted tea, one with verjus, even a ‘fast food menu’ is in the works — featuring flavors like pizza and shawarma.

Everything comes with a story, an illustration, a mini-presentation. You can feel that this is Yen's playground, his life's work, his zen place. And at the same time, he is incredibly humble, grateful that he gets to do this. "The glass, the ice, the napkin — everything has to be right. Here I want to take people on a journey, in their minds, through taste."

Only six seats, a tattoo as an entry ticket, and a DM to the right place — DRAGON only lets you in if you really want to.

4. KAGE

On a dreary afternoon, I step into KAGE in the Dansaert district. And honestly? I was immediately charmed. But forget the idea of a quiet tearoom – here it is lively, buzzing, with a good vibe in the air. No whispering tea ceremony, but a place where tea culture is celebrated to the rhythm of the city.

Owner Boupinh Lam, passionate and with an encyclopedic knowledge of tea, is constantly experimenting. KAGE is not only the spot for matcha lovers, but also a creative playground where flavors are reinvented. Think of creamy matcha latte with just the right bitterness, or a refreshing iced tea with white peach and raspberry.

“That matcha is prepared here with so much care, it’s not just a drink, it’s a moment in itself.”

And the menu? There’s much more on it than you expect. You’ll also find delicious sando sandwiches – for example with panko chicken or grilled vegetables – and pastries that are a mix between Japanese and Brussels chic. My favorite? The light matcha-strawberry choux. A sweet little dessert.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, the place gets an extra dimension: KAGE then transforms into a tea cocktail bar. Yep, tea as the base for cocktails. We tasted a hojicha highball with Japanese whisky – smoky, deep, and surprisingly light at the same time. Here, everything is about balance and finesse, but then with spice.

Brussels, I love you
