Brussels: my favorite hotspots

Brussels, my city! It has so many beautiful and tasty places to discover. In the weekend, Wim and Grace like to go to our capital with 1 motto: looking for tasty things! That is why no gastronomic star restaurants, but toppers in their genre. And then strolling through the cosiest streets… In this blog I like to take you on a culinary road trip in the city where I grew up as a child.

This time it is the SMASHBURGER next up, the burger of the moment: Juicy crispy beef, melting cheese, soft bun… mmmm! The smashburger is not just any burger, with this technique the meatball is really 'smashed' or flattened while frying (teppanyaki), which caramelizes the juices. This gives the unique flavor and crunch to the meat. Is your mouth watering yet? Discover my full report on 3 of the best smashburger hotspots in Brussels here. Enjoy!

Bintje

Simonisstraat 62, 1050 Brussels

Fresh fries & dirty burgers… I like! Us Belgians are crazy about fries, so Bintje is the place to go in Brussels. You can enjoy that little extra: they use organic potatoes for the freshly cut fries, which are double-fried with the skin in organic sunflower oil. And then a next level smashburger with homemade sauces and a cold pint… It doesn't need to be more than that, right?

I went for the smashburger 'le bête cheese' with extra cheese of course! The Irish beef for the burger is ground on-site and the combination with crumbled bacon and melting caramelized onions is DIVINE! An absolute must try when in Brussels.

RAMBO

Washingtonstraat 7, 1050 Elsene

RAMBO, I've been going there for a while since they opened! It was and still is a mega-hype with the very first real smashburger concept ever in Belgium! The burgers at RAMBO never disappoint and there’s always something new on the menu every week. All smashburgers are made from delicious Black Angus beef, but the buns and sauces are also homemade. The beloved 'potato buns' are wonderfully soft, baked with potato flour, and thanks to their unique texture, they are ideal for absorbing the juices and sauces from the burger.

I went for the 'classic smashburger', a heavenly combination of Black Angus, American cheese, onion, mustard, ketchup, and pickles, soooo good! Besides the limited editions, there are two regular burgers on the menu: a pimped version of the classic with a secret sauce and also a veggie version. You can freely add extra bacon, fries, and sauce to your heart's content! The natural wines are an extra bonus here.

Team RAMBO experiments non-stop with the most surprising combinations of burgers and sandwiches. They rightly call themselves 'The masters in the Burgerverse'!

KITSUNE

Rue Berthelot 106, 1190 Vorst

Last but not least, we made a stop at Kitsune! Not so easy to find, as they are located in a brasserie… but those who seek will find. It is a unique Asian Fusion restaurant with the best homemade vegan smashburgers! Their concept is the delightful combination of California style burgers and Asian flavors from Japan, Korea, and Thailand. The menu features five regular burgers based on falafel, tofu, and oyster mushrooms. The cheese and buns are also 100% vegan and made from potatoes.

Their specialty is also the Furikake fries, potato fries spiced up with Japanese Furikake. These spices give a sweet-sour twist to the classic fries. But also the fried kimchi rice balls are crazy delicious and the cookies are to die for. The falafel burgers are real flavor bombs thanks to the Korean pepper Gochugaru. Instead of traditional chickpeas, Kitsune uses Eastern Adzuki beans. And yes, they are also smashed!

Here, vegan burgers definitely hold their own against classic smashburgers. Thanks to the pure and raw ingredients, they create the perfect flavors and textures, like the real thing!
